Project: Santa!

Since Christmas was coming up we were asked to create a innovative Santa for this year Christmas card.

So starting off with a Moodboard of exciting Santa Clause that move away from the regular stereotypical one we have known to love.

Initial Ideas:

My aim was to think outside the box and move away from a typical Santa we knew and love. I thought that since we live in a media era of "bad ass" or "epic" I wanted my Santa to take a few ideas from these two things and create a Santa that can 'look' like a bad ass hence why my mood board is more leaned to tattoos, muscle, bikers and overall bulky body type.

Final Sketch:

Final sketch of my idea.

WIP:

Finished Piece:

I am pleased with the Christmas card art piece i have successfully portrayed my idea of a 'hard core' delivering presents with big powerful gun whilst he rides on Rudolf. the only thing im not happy with is the lack of deatil i used for both Rudolf and Santa.

Perspective Excercise

For this week assignment we were asked to practice our perspective eyes to find the horizon lines in these following character concept art pieces. We were then asked to draw up their simple forms to understand the basis of their design.

Project: Plane Crash

For this week's assignment we asked to come up with a plane crash scenario with the main character walking away from the crash site.

The moodboard is based on various shots in different angels of 747; the angels range from take off, taxi and flight mode.

In this particular moodboard i was focusing on wreckages from the flight, I ws trying to focus on keying on the weak points of the plane and what ruble is left from an accident.

Key areas or "monuments" of NY however looking back at the brief these monuments of areas are mostly located in the centre of NY instead of East side of NY.

A blueprint of 747, the reason why I took this as a reference is because I wanted study the different angels to see how it looks.
This reference picture is very helpful because its gives an x-ray visual on the components of a 747 which is something that I can use to to volumise the crash scene and use the same components to express that dramatic events that will occur in my painting.

Video Links to Plane crashes in TVs and Movies:

Sketches of Airplane crashes, i wanted to analyse the different crash that have happened over the years and target the weak points of where the Plane has broken apart which are highlighted in red. This will help give the audience a "motion" capture as to what happened in the final stages of the crash before it came to a halt.

Sketches of airplane wreckages after the fire has been put out. these sketches are from the aftermath of the accident and the others are the pieces that have be scattered from the explosion.

This is a study of fire and smoke and understanding how the smoke and fire collaborate with each other during the first stage of explosion to the extended part of explosion where the smoke develops. Also it is the best part to capture what colours occur during the explosion; also how it behaves.

This composition is based near the Manhattan Bridge which is located in the East side of NY, the reason why i chosed this particular scene is because it is near the airport and the entrance of the bridge is could be taken as a "monument" type. The follow screenshot are from different angels of the street to capture the right angel.

Composition 1
Composition 2-1
 Composition 2-1
Composition 2 Final

Composition 3
 Composition 3-1
Composition 4
3D Composition 4 (Final Setting)

I used the 3d software to make a mimic scene of of my chosen composition "4" and used the 3d scene to help me place the wrecked Airplane into my scene which I can later use it as a reference.

Day Time Version

Night Time  Version

My final pieces are very rushed however it gives the audience the impression of how brutal the plane crash was in the specific area. I like the rough, quick and sketchy painting style however i think in order to improve this piece i should ass some background paint to give it some depth.

Project: Halloween

This project is about the up and coming Halloween time where we were asked to create a concept art theme for Halloween.

For starters this is my mood board covering the main monsters and places associated with Halloween.

Halloween Sketches:-

Here are a few sketches of Halloween themed settings, monsters and items.

Initial Ideas:-

These are my intial ideas for this project, for my final piece i decided to go with the headless horseman in the dark forest (Idea 2).

Final Piece:-

The Halloween concept art came out very well, it shows the classic horror theme of Halloween with the dark forest and grey smog. This piece is a major step up from my previous art pieces and i am pleased with its outcome.

Projecct: Trees

A project based on trees with character (scenes that focus on trees that gives character to the surrounding or  to the tree it self).

My moodboard, looking at the different concept art of tree that give character to the scene or the trees itself.

 Tree Study and Anatomy:-

looking at the popular colours of trees. I did a small texture study to see how the tree is created and how it gives that scaley effect.

these pacific study are based on the horror themes of trees, the study are mainly based on trees that have no leaves and looking at the shape of the bark in silhouettes.

Looking at leaf colours and the colour changes of leafs during seasonal change. understanding how the leaf grow off the branches.

looking at the different tree shapes that are most commonly seen in our parks, these studies are mostly used for how different types of tree have a different bush shapes thus giving their name.

Existing Concept Art Analysis:-

this concept art is from the popular games called Skrim. the concept art is for a town called Riverwood, the reasons why I looked at this particular piece is because I looking at how the trees have helped distinguish what sort of buildings they were. looking at the bottom left art piece it is clear that this is a ranch of a place where they specialise in wood.

This concept art is from Assassin Creed game, the reason why this caught my eyes is because how the use of nature i.e plants, trees, ponds help make the environment "seem" rich. In the game, the same place looks very rich with the use of nature; I think that if the nature wasn't there the place would be deserted and will look like ruins.

Initial Ideas:-

The two ideas are based on the horror theme since leaf-less trees are most commonly related to the horror theme.

As the horror theme, i thought of ideas of fantasy settings since tree are used or are iconic for wisdom or signs.

Idea Refinement:-

idea refinement of one of my fantasy idea.

Final Piece:-

finished piece, i personally think that I have rushed it with the details and tones; however I think that tried to convey my idea well.

Project: Surrealism

Probably the most weirdest assignment from a game course; however it will be fun to do since I can go wild with my imagination.

I started of with a moodboard to define what sort of artwork are done for this art movement.

Artist Studies -

Called "The Persistence of Memory"; painted by Salvador Dali. the painting has been interpreted on how time is rigid and follows a solid rule that can not be changed. The reason why I chosed to analyse this piece of art was because it fits very well with the meaning behind surrealism of dreams; the pocket watch show that time is ever lasting but is used of withered away slowly (melting away). Looking at this painting gave me a idea that how modern technology has become a central part of our lifes and consumes a lot of our own personal time from using computers, mp3 and games console.

Outline of Idea -
A lot of these painting have been painted in their own era, I however i would like to create a surrealist piece where modern surroundings have a impact on our lives and somewhat on our dreams.

Sketches -

Rough sketches of my ideas that are directed at my main idea, I drew various ideas to present my idea as best as possible however not all of them were surreal enough.

For my chosen idea i looked at Van Gogh paint style because i wanted to impose that into my piece and thought of a ancient artitech that has was used as a technology and thought of Stonehenge. My chosen idea is Idea 3 and this picture shows a few refinements of my ideas. I selected to go for the top one as my final idea.

Final Sketch -

Final -

the surrealism art piece was finished on time however, the aulity of work as yet again not achieved my skill level. The background came out well however the main focus of the art piece did not. This is because i did not manage to achieve the 'rocky' effect of Stonehenge that i was aiming for. the other fault with my art piece was that my idea was not clear enough so my colleagues did not understand what my idea was.
